Origin & history
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception has been observed in Chile since the colonial era, introduced by Spanish missionaries. The doctrine was formally defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854, but the devotion was already deeply rooted in Chilean Catholicism. In 1818, Chile's liberator Bernardo O'Higgins proclaimed the Virgin of Carmen as the country's patroness, reinforcing Marian devotion. Over time, the Immaculate Conception became a key holiday, especially after it was declared a public holiday in the 19th century. The date coincides with the eve of Chile's Day of the Virgin of Lo Vásquez, a major pilgrimage, linking the two celebrations.
Customs & traditions
Chileans attend special masses on December 8, often with elaborate floral decorations in churches. Many families gather for festive meals, featuring traditional dishes like pastel de choclo (corn pie) or empanadas. In some towns, processions carry statues of the Virgin Mary through the streets. A notable custom is the pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Lo Vásquez, where thousands travel on foot or bicycle the night before, December 7–8. This pilgrimage blends religious devotion with a social outing, and participants often carry candles, flags, or images of the Virgin.
Why it is celebrated
The Immaculate Conception celebrates the Catholic belief that Mary was conceived without original sin, making her a pure vessel for Jesus Christ. For Chileans, it is a day of national religious identity, reflecting the country's strong Catholic heritage. The holiday also marks the beginning of the Christmas season, and many use it as an opportunity for family bonding and spiritual reflection.
