Battle of Arica

The Battle of Arica occurred on June 7, 1880, as part of the War of the Pacific (1879–1884) between Chile and the allied forces of Peru and Bolivia. After Chile's victory at the Battle of Tacna, Chilean forces under Colonel Pedro Lagos marched on Arica, a heavily fortified Peruvian port defended by Colonel Francisco Bolognesi and his troops. The Chilean assault began at dawn, with soldiers climbing the steep Morro de Arica under heavy fire. After fierce hand-to-hand combat, the Chileans overwhelmed the defenders. Bolognesi and many of his officers died in the battle, and the Chilean flag was raised over the Morro, marking a decisive victory for Chile. This battle opened the way to the capital Lima and secured Chile's northern territorial gains, including the future annexation of the Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions. The date was officially declared a public holiday in Chile in 1915 to honor the soldiers' bravery and sacrifice.
