Army Day in Chile commemorates the establishment of the Chilean Army and its heroic deeds during the War of Independence and subsequent conflicts. The date, September 19, was chosen because it follows Independence Day (September 18), creating a two-day national celebration known as Fiestas Patrias. The first official military parade was held on September 19, 1818, a year after the famous Battle of Chacabuco, in which the Army under General Bernardo O'Higgins and José de San Martín secured a decisive victory against Spanish forces. Over time, this day became dedicated to honoring the army's contributions to the nation's sovereignty and security.

The parade includes traditional huaso (Chilean cowboy) cavalry units dressed in regional costumes. Families and friends gather for asados (barbecues), enjoying empanadas, choripán, and terremoto cocktails. Many people dress in huaso attire, dance cueca (the national dance), and participate in fondas (festive fairs) that feature games, music, and traditional food.
