Canada Day

Canada Day commemorates the July 1, 1867, passage of the British North America Act (now the Constitution Act, 1867), which united the colonies of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion called Canada. This was a key step toward full independence from Britain, though Canada did not gain complete sovereignty until the Statute of Westminster in 1931 and the patriation of the Constitution in 1982.

Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was established in 1879. The name was changed to Canada Day in 1982, reflecting a growing sense of national identity and separation from colonial ties. The date marks the birth of Canada as a self-governing country, with its own parliament and prime minister, while remaining part of the British Empire.

Canada Day is celebrated with public fireworks, parades, concerts, barbecues, and outdoor festivals across the country. Many people wear red and white, the national colors, and display the maple leaf flag. Major celebrations occur on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, where the Governor General and Prime Minister often attend, along with a large concert and fireworks display. Traditional foods include Canadian specialties like poutine (fries with cheese curds and gravy), butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, and maple syrup treats. Beer and other drinks are commonly consumed at celebrations. Many also enjoy camping, hiking, or visiting national parks, which offer free admission on Canada Day. Fireworks are a highlight, with local displays lighting up the night sky in cities and towns.
