The holiday commemorates the Treaty of San Stefano, signed on March 3, 1878, which ended the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) and established an autonomous Bulgarian principality. This event came after nearly five centuries of Ottoman domination (1396–1878). The war was instigated by Russia, which intervened on behalf of the Bulgarian population following the brutal suppression of the April Uprising (1876). The liberation was a pivotal moment in Bulgarian national revival, leading to the re-establishment of Bulgarian statehood, though full independence was not achieved until 1908. The date March 3 was chosen as the national day because the Treaty of San Stefano is seen as the founding act of modern Bulgaria, despite later revisions at the Congress of Berlin that reduced the territory.
