Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932

The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, also known as the Paulista War, was a revolt in the state of São Paulo against the federal government of Getúlio Vargas. The revolutionaries demanded the drafting of a new constitution after Vargas closed the National Congress and ruled by decree following the 1930 Revolution. On July 9, 1932, thousands of Paulistas took up arms, believing that São Paulo, being the economic powerhouse of Brazil, should have a greater political role and constitutional rights. The conflict lasted three months, with São Paulo's forces ultimately defeated by the federal army in early October. Despite the military defeat, Vargas later convened a Constituent Assembly in 1934, partly in response to the rebellion.

Traditional food includes the 'bolinho caipira' (a type of fried polenta) and 'pão de queijo' (cheese bread), often served at family gatherings and community events.

The Constitutionalist Revolution is a symbol of São Paulo's identity and its struggle for democracy and federalism. It represents the fight against authoritarianism and the demand for constitutional order, which eventually led to the 1934 Constitution. For Paulistas, the holiday is a day of pride, remembering the sacrifices of those who fought for what they believed was a fairer political system.
