Origin & history
Easter Monday, the day after Easter Sunday, has been observed in Benin since the arrival of Christianity through European missionaries in the 19th century. Portuguese traders introduced Catholicism in the 16th century, but the holiday gained prominence during French colonial rule (1894–1960), when France institutionalized Christian holidays. After independence in 1960, Benin retained Easter Monday as a public holiday, blending its religious roots with local traditions. Today, it reflects the deep Christian faith of a significant portion of the population, particularly in the south.
Customs & traditions
Beninese families attend special church services on Easter Monday, often featuring joyful hymns, prayers, and dramatic reenactments of the resurrection. Afterward, people gather for large communal meals featuring traditional dishes like pounded yam (fufu) with peanut or palm nut soup, grilled fish, and chicken. Children participate in egg-decorating and egg-hunting activities, adapted from European traditions. In urban areas like Cotonou, Easter Monday is also a time for picnics, beach outings, and friendly football matches, as the holiday coincides with the start of the rainy season and outdoor leisure.
Why it is celebrated
Easter Monday marks the culmination of the Holy Week celebrations, emphasizing the joy of Christ's victory over death. For Beninese Christians, it reinforces spiritual renewal and community bonds. The holiday also provides a space for intergenerational connection, blending Christian teachings with local customs, and is a symbol of religious freedom in a country where Christianity coexists with Islam and indigenous Vodun beliefs.
