Christmas in Belize traces its origins to the colonial era when British settlers introduced Anglican and other Christian traditions to the region during the 17th and 18th centuries. Missionaries, particularly the Anglican Church, established Christmas as a key religious festival, and the holiday was later reinforced by the arrival of other Christian denominations, including Methodists and Catholics. Over time, the celebration blended with indigenous and African-derived customs, particularly through the influence of enslaved Africans and their descendants, who added their own musical and culinary traditions. After Belize became a British colony in the 19th century, Christmas remained a central holiday, and the tradition of decorating homes with lights and trees became widespread among the elite, later adopted by all social classes. Today, Christmas in Belize reflects a fusion of British colonial heritage with the multicultural fabric of Belizean society, including Maya, Garifuna, and Mestizo communities, each contributing distinct elements to the celebration.

Belizean Christmas celebrations span from early December to New Year's. Families decorate their homes with lights, artificial Christmas trees, and nativity scenes. A unique tradition is the 'Bram' (or 'Bram Dance'), a Creole street party with loud music, dancing, and drinking, especially in Belize City and rural villages. Many attend 'Las Posadas,' a nine-day Catholic novena reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for shelter, ending with a feast. On Christmas Eve, families gather for a late dinner of traditional foods such as 'relish' (a meat stew with cassava and plantains), tamales (made with cornmeal and chicken or pork), and 'torrejas' (sweet fritters). Christmas Day often begins with church service, followed by a midday meal featuring baked ham, turkey, rice and beans, potato salad, and fruitcake soaked in rum. Gift-giving is common, but the focus is on family reunions and community gatherings. The Garifuna community adds its own flavor with punta music and dance, while Maya villages incorporate native foods like pibil (slow-roasted pork) and atole (corn drink).

Christmas Day holds deep religious significance for the predominantly Christian population of Belize, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. Beyond its religious aspects, it serves as a time for family unity, cultural expression, and national identity. The holiday fosters a sense of community as people from all ethnic backgrounds participate in shared traditions, reflecting Belize's multicultural harmony. For many, Christmas is also a season of generosity and charity, with food drives and gift distributions for the less fortunate.
