Origin & history
The celebration of Christmas on December 25 was established by the Christian Church in the 4th century, likely to co-opt pagan winter solstice festivals. In Belgium, Christianity has been the dominant religion since the Middle Ages, and Christmas became an important feast. Over time, Belgian Christmas traditions evolved, blending Catholic practices with local folklore, such as the figure of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) on December 6, which is separate from Christmas Day.

Belgians celebrate Christmas Day as a family-oriented holiday. The day typically begins with attending Mass. The main Christmas meal is usually a festive lunch or dinner, featuring dishes like turkey, game, or seafood, accompanied by Belgian chocolates and speculoos cookies. Gift-giving occurs on Saint Nicholas Day (December 6) or on Christmas Eve, but not typically on Christmas Day itself. Many families also set up a Christmas tree and nativity scene.
