Origin & history
Christmas in Belarus has roots in early Christian traditions, but the Catholic observance specifically derives from the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church. After the Union of Lublin in 1569, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth brought Catholicism to Belarusian lands. Catholic Christmas was suppressed during Soviet rule (1917–1991) as part of state atheism, but was re-established as a public holiday after Belarus gained independence in 1991. Today it is recognized as an official state holiday alongside Orthodox Christmas (January 7).
The date of December 25 follows the Gregorian calendar, while Orthodox Christmas follows the Julian calendar. This split reflects historical divisions between Catholic and Orthodox populations. In modern Belarus, the government acknowledges both traditions as part of the country's multicultural heritage.
Customs & traditions
Belarusian Catholics typically celebrate with a festive dinner on Christmas Eve (December 24), known as 'Wigilia,' which includes 12 meatless dishes symbolizing the 12 apostles. Common dishes include kutia (a sweet grain pudding), borscht with uszka (small dumplings), and various fish dishes. The meal begins when the first star appears in the sky. Many families leave an empty seat at the table for an unexpected guest.
On Christmas Day, families attend Mass at local Catholic churches, such as the Cathedral of the Holy Name of Mary in Minsk. After services, people visit relatives, exchange gifts, and enjoy extended meals. Traditional songs called 'kalyadki' are sung, and some communities perform nativity plays. In rural areas, carolers go door-to-door. The festive period extends until the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6.

Catholic Christmas Day is a major religious observance for Belarus's Catholic community, which constitutes about 15% of the population. It commemorates the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ, a cornerstone of Christian faith. For many, it is a time for spiritual reflection, family unity, and charitable acts.

Its official status alongside Orthodox Christmas underscores the country's commitment to multiculturalism.
