Origin & history
Barbados became a British colony in 1625 and remained under British rule for over 300 years. The movement toward independence gained momentum in the mid-20th century, led by figures such as Grantley Adams and Errol Barrow. On November 30, 1966, Barbados officially became an independent nation within the Commonwealth, with Errol Barrow serving as its first Prime Minister. The date was chosen to coincide with the end of the hurricane season and the beginning of the tourist season. The Union Jack was lowered for the last time at Independence Square in Bridgetown, replaced by the newly adopted flag of Barbados, symbolizing the nation's sovereignty.
Customs & traditions
The day begins with a national parade at the Garrison Historic Area in Bridgetown, featuring the Barbados Defence Force, police, and schoolchildren. The Prime Minister delivers a national address, and the Governor-General, representing the monarch, attends the ceremonies. Many Barbadians wear the national colors (blue, gold, and black) and display flags on homes and businesses. The evening concludes with a fireworks display and cultural performances, often including calypso and tuk band music. Traditional foods such as flying fish, cou-cou, pudding and souse, and rum-based drinks are enjoyed in family gatherings. Wreath-laying ceremonies at the National Heroes Square honor the nation's founding fathers.
