Independence and National Day

The holiday marks March 26, 1971, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan, sparking the nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War. The declaration followed decades of political and economic marginalization of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) by West Pakistan, culminating in the 1970 general election where the Awami League won a landslide but was denied power. On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani military launched Operation Searchlight, a brutal crackdown on Bengali civilians, intellectuals, and students in Dhaka. In response, Sheikh Mujib declared independence early on March 26, before his arrest. The war ended on December 16, 1971, with Bangladesh's victory, making March 26 a day of both solemn remembrance and national pride.

The day begins with a 31-gun salute at dawn. The President and Prime Minister pay homage at the National Martyrs’ Memorial (Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho) in Savar, laying wreaths. People from all walks of life, including political leaders, cultural activists, and families, also visit the memorial. National flags are hoisted on government buildings, schools, and homes, and the streets are decorated with banners and lights. Special prayers are offered in mosques, temples, and churches for the souls of the martyrs. Parades, cultural programs, and singing of patriotic songs are held nationwide. Schools and colleges organize sports, art competitions, and discussions on the liberation struggle. Traditional Bengali foods such as panta bhat (fermented rice) and hilsha fish are often prepared, recalling the wartime solidarity. The national media broadcasts documentaries and interviews with freedom fighters throughout the day.

Independence and National Day is Bangladesh's most important national holiday, symbolizing the nation's sovereignty, unity, and the sacrifice of millions who died for freedom. It reaffirms the country's identity as an independent Bengali nation and honors the legacy of the Liberation War. The day also serves as a reminder of the values of democracy, justice, and self-determination that guided the independence movement, fostering patriotism and national consciousness among citizens of all ages.
