All Saints' Day originated in the early Christian church as a day to commemorate all martyrs and saints. In Austria, the holiday has been observed since at least the 9th century, influenced by the Frankish Empire's adoption of the feast. Pope Gregory IV officially established November 1 as the universal date in 835. Over time, Austrian customs merged Christian traditions with pre-Christian autumnal remembrance of the dead.

A traditional food is 'Allerheiligenstriezel,' a braided yeast bread, sometimes given as a gift to godchildren or the poor.
