The tradition of celebrating the sovereign's birthday in Australia dates back to the early colonial era. Originally, the birthday of King George III was celebrated on June 4, which became the customary date for the monarch's birthday in the colonies. After Queen Victoria's accession, her birthday (May 24) was celebrated as a holiday. Following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, her son Edward VII's birthday (November 9) was celebrated. However, it soon became impractical to observe the actual birthday due to weather and scheduling. In 1936, King George V's birthday (June 3) was fixed as the official date, and it has been observed on the second Monday in June ever since, except in Western Australia and Queensland. The holiday's name changes with the reigning monarch's gender; it was the Queen's Birthday during Queen Elizabeth II's reign and became the King's Birthday upon King Charles III's accession in 2022.
