Women's Day

International Women's Day has its roots in the early 20th-century labor movements in Europe and North America, first observed in 1911. In Armenia, the holiday was introduced during the Soviet era, officially adopted in 1922 as part of the Soviet calendar. The day was originally politicized to highlight women's roles in socialist construction, but over time it evolved into a broader celebration of womanhood, blending Soviet traditions with Armenian cultural elements.

In Armenia, Women's Day is marked by the widespread custom of men giving flowers, particularly red roses and tulips, and small gifts to women—colleagues, friends, and family. It is common for workplaces and schools to hold celebratory events, such as concerts or tea parties, honoring female staff. Many families gather for festive meals, often featuring traditional Armenian dishes like dolma (stuffed grape leaves), khash (a hearty soup), and lavash bread, along with sweets and champagne. In recent years, some organizations also host seminars or discussions on women's rights, adding a more activist dimension to the celebrations.

Women's Day in Armenia serves as a dual occasion: it is both a heartfelt tribute to the women in one's life—mothers, wives, daughters, and colleagues—and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality.
