Nowruz

Albania Β· Date: Monday, March 22, 2027

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is celebrated on the spring equinox by Albania's Bektashi Muslim community, symbolizing renewal and the arrival of spring.

Origin & history

Nowruz, meaning 'new day' in Persian, dates back over 3,000 years to ancient Persia, rooted in Zoroastrianism. It celebrates the vernal equinox, marking the first day of spring and the start of the Iranian calendar. In Albania, Nowruz was introduced through Bektashism, a Sufi Islamic order that incorporated pre-Islamic Persian traditions. The Bektashi community, centered in Tirana, has preserved Nowruz as a key religious and cultural holiday, blending Persian Zoroastrian elements with Islamic mysticism. Historically, the Bektashi order faced persecution under the Ottoman Empire and later communist Albania, but after the fall of communism in 1991, Nowruz was officially recognized and publicly celebrated.

Customs & traditions

Albanian Bektashis celebrate Nowruz with communal prayers and rituals at tekkes (Bektashi lodges), particularly the World Headquarters of the Bektashi Order in Tirana. Celebrations include special dishes like 'samanu' (wheat pudding) and 'kuku' (herb frittata), along with sweets and dried fruits. Families clean their homes thoroughly, symbolizing purification, and set the 'haft-sin' table with seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter 'sin', such as apples, garlic, and sumac. Gatherings involve poetry readings, especially verses by the Persian poet Rumi, and music. People wear new clothes, visit friends and family, and exchange gifts, focusing on spiritual renewal and community bonding.

Why it is celebrated

For Albanian Bektashis, Nowruz represents the triumph of light over darkness and the renewal of nature and spirit. It commemorates the birth of Imam Ali, a central figure in Shia Islam, and the beginning of the Islamic calendar year for Bektashis. The holiday emphasizes themes of forgiveness, charity, and unity, serving as a time for self-reflection and strengthening community ties. It also highlights the unique cultural heritage of Albania’s Bektashi minority, affirming their identity within the predominantly Sunni Muslim and Christian country.
